(LifeSiteNews) — A video clip of a priest in Ireland asking the Lord to “take” U.S. President Donald Trump went viral after it was shared on TikTok.

During the Prayers of the Faithful at Mass, the priest said, “We pray for peace in the world. We pray for Donald Trump that the Lord will take him.” Members of the congregation laughed loudly before the priest clarified himself, saying he was sorry for the slip and that he meant to say “take away his pain.”

Before that, the cleric had said “war is taking place, which is absolutely outrageous. There is no need for it.”

The unidentified priest failed to ask for prayers for President Trump and others, for a swift end to the conflict and for conversion.

Catholics and non-Catholics reacted on social media to the priest’s supposed “slip of the tongue” with comments ranging from “May your prayers come true” to “He’s saying what everyone’s thinking. Bless him.”

The priest’s “prayer” followed a week of controversy between President Trump and Pope Leo XIV over the war in Iran.

Leo said last week that he was not afraid of Trump and that he would not enter into a debate with him about the war. He was responding to a post by Trump on Truth Social that was critical of the pontiff.

“I have no fear of the Trump administration or speaking out loudly of the message of the Gospel, which is what I believe I am called to do, what the Church is called to do,” the Pope said. “We are not politicians. We are not dealing with foreign policy with the same perspective he might understand it, but I do believe in the message of the Gospel: ‘blessed are the peacemakers,’ is a message the world needs to hear.”

Trump had written that he did not want “a Pope who thinks it’s ok for Iran to have a nuclear weapon” and went on to say that Pope Leo should “focus on being a great Pope, not a politician.”

Trump later doubled down, saying, “(Pope Leo) doesn’t understand it, he is not the guy that should be talking about war, because he has no idea what’s going on. He doesn’t understand that in Iran they killed 42,000 protesters last month. He doesn’t understand that, does he?” Trump said.

Several days later at an inter-religious gathering in Cameroon, Leo appeared to respond.

“Blessed are the peacemakers!” said Pope Leo, seemingly about to quote Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, but then adding, “but woe to those who manipulate religion and the very name of God for their own military, economic and political gain, dragging that which is sacred into darkness and filth.”
