Canada is becoming a ‘refugee’ hub for LGBT-identifying Americans – LifeSite

(LifeSiteNews) — According to CIC News – the largest trusted website tracking immigration in Canada – “eligible LGBTQ Americans are being fast-tracked in their applications for proof of Canadian citizenship certificates.” While most applications from the U.S. have to wait for at least a year, some LGBT-identifying American applicants are getting theirs in just two weeks.

LGBT-identifying Americans are taking advantage of a change in Canadian law that took effect on December 15 of last year. In 2023, an Ontario court ruled that denying citizenship to the descendants of Canadian citizens was unconstitutional because it discriminated against people based on where they were born. The government did not dispute this truly wild ruling, and responded with Bill C-3.

Bill C-3 removed the “first-generation limit” on Canadian citizenship, which restricted citizenship by descent – that is, Canadians passing on Canadian citizenship to foreign-born descendants – to only the first generation born outside of Canada. Parents could pass citizenship on to foreign-born children, but not grandchildren.

Now, however, anyone born before December 15, 2025, who can prove that they are a descendant of a Canadian citizen is now considered to be, de facto, a Canadian citizen, regardless of how many generations have elapsed. Foreigners can claim Canadian citizenship based on great-grandparents, or even great-great grandparents. This has suddenly created millions of potential Canadian citizens – in the United States alone.

LGBT-identifying Americans have been swift to take advantage of this. “This spring, processing times have increased dramatically, as thousands of Americans have been applying, including many LGBTQ Americans who have become concerned for their safety in the current political environment in the United States,” reported CIC News on May 25, adding:

Specifically, a number of users across the web identifying themselves as trans Americans have reported having received their Canadian citizenship certificates in as little as two weeks through expedited processing. LGBTQ Americans with Canadian ancestry may qualify for expedited processing under the criteria established by Canada’s citizenship department.

Indeed, the Canadian government appears to be actively advertising to LGBT people. The Canadian government’s online “Help Centre” states that for some applicants, “we may be able to process applications faster than our normal processing times” in order “to help avoid situations of harm or hardship due to factors such as … sexual orientation, gender identity or expression or membership in particular groups.” According to CIC News:

When applying for a proof of Canadian citizenship certificate, applicants can select one of three genders: F (female), M (male), or X (another gender). If applying for their first citizenship certificate and selecting a different gender than that on their birth certificate, an applicant must also submit a Request for a Change of Sex or Gender Identifier form (IRM 0002). No medical records or other documentation are required; gender selection is entirely at the applicant’s discretion.

Last year, the Toronto-based NGO “Rainbow Railroad” claimed that it was “particularly concerned about the worsening situation for minorities in the United States since Donald Trump’s return to the White House,” and noted that in June 2025, “requests for assistance from the U.S. increased tenfold from the previous year,” according to France 24.

One wonders if some of these requests are for parents seeking sex change surgeries for their children – surgeries that would be banned in many places in the U.S., as well as the U.K. Last year, Reuters “spoke with a trans woman who came to Canada in April to file a claim, and to a woman who came to file a claim on behalf of her young trans daughter.” A Chicago family applied for asylum in Canada last year with the explicit aim of ensuring that their trans-identifying daughter would be able to keep taking puberty blockers.

As other nations increasingly move away from “transing minors,” Canada could become the worst sort of hotspot – one of the few places where children can be subjected to so-called sex change surgeries before they’re old enough to vote, drink, or drive.
