(LifeSiteNews) – More than 50 pro-life and pro-family leaders signed a joint letter urging the Trump administration to fully disqualify Planned Parenthood from any taxpayer-funded program.
The October 22 letter, spearheaded by Students for Life and joined by the leaders of American Life League, Susan B. Anthony, Family Research Council, Center for Medical Progress, and more, thanks the administration for the work it has done so far to reduce taxpayer subsidies to the abortion industry but calls on them to formally debar Planned Parenthood to close off any remaining avenues or legal arguments they might exploit.
The federal Suspension & Disbarment process “protects the federal government from fraud, waste and abuse by using a number of tools to avoid doing business with non-responsible contractors,” by deeming a contractor ineligible for government contracts if an investigation determines appropriate grounds, including but not limited to crime, fraud, “(w)illful, or a history of, failure to perform,” “(k)nowing failure to disclose violation of criminal law,” or “(a)ny other cause that affects present responsibility.”
The signatories argue that Planned Parenthood more than qualifies for debarment, citing “illegal trafficking in baby body parts,” alleged “Medicare/Medicaid Fraud,” “failing to follow Health & Safety Standards,” “Failures to Report Sex Crimes,” and “Employee Reports & Legal Action from Accusations of a Racist Work Environment.”
“The work that the GOP did in the ‘Big, Beautiful Bill’ made it possible to cut Planned Parenthood from Medicaid funding for one year, a move that abortion supporters vehemently opposed, claiming that Planned Parenthood was ‘qualified’ to get federal funds. Those claims of being qualified to participate in programs were the heart of the abortion industry’s argument in Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic as well,” the letter argued. “But Planned Parenthood’s track record shows that they should not be allowed to receive a single penny of taxpayer support. They are unqualified to work for the American taxpayer. Given the many complaints against them, the debarment process will allow the federal government to officially find them unqualified and therefore ineligible to participate in any federal programs or to receive any federal funds.”
Without Roe v. Wade to ensure abortion’s legality, the abortion industry relies heavily on taxpayer funding to stay in operation. Last year, Planned Parenthood’s most recent annual report revealed that its affiliates across the nation took in $699.3 million in government “health services” reimbursements and grants, accounting for 39% of its total revenue during that period. At the same time, the abortion chain committed 392,715 abortions – yet its legitimate health services, such as pap tests and cancer screenings, continued to decline as percentages of its overall business.
Within weeks of returning to office, Trump began enforcing the Hyde Amendment against direct funding of most elective abortions, reinstated the Mexico City Policy that forbids non-governmental organizations from using taxpayer dollars for elective abortions abroad, and cut millions in pro-abortion subsidies by freezing U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) spending.
In March, the Trump administration froze Title X “family planning” grants to nonprofits it said violated its executive orders on immigration and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, including Planned Parenthood affiliates in nine states.
In July, President Donald Trump signed into law his so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” (BBB), a wide-ranging tax and spending package that contains a one-year ban on federal tax dollars going through Medicaid to any entity that provides abortions for reasons other than rape, incest, or supposed threats to the mother’s life.
Other Republicans have proposed stand-alone measures to fully cut off Planned Parenthood’s government funding: the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion and Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act, which permanently bans federal funds from being used for abortion; and the Defund Planned Parenthood Act, which disqualifies Planned Parenthood and its affiliates specifically. But they would require 60 votes to make it through the Senate.
