Israel Sent Elite Units Into Azerbaijan And Had Presence In Other Countries During Iran War: Report
Israel covertly deployed military and intelligence units inside Azerbaijan during the Iran war, providing them with valuable intel into northern Iran, CNN reported.
Citing four sources familiar with the matter, the network noted that Israel also established covert military sites in other countries that helped facilitate strikes deep inside Iran, including in Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, and Somaliland.
Azerbaijan rejected any suggestion that it had allowed its territory to be used for reconnaissance on Iran, which borders the country.
“We firmly reject unfounded claims regarding the alleged use of Azerbaijan’s territory for operations against third countries,” country officials said.
CNN also reported that Israel established a military position in Somliland that allowed Israel aircraft a place to stop on long flights to Iran.
Axios had previously reported that Israel had sent an Iron Dome missile defense system to the United Arab Emirates, along with troops to operate it. Early in the war, the UAE was targeted more than any other country with Iran firing around 550 ballistic and cruise missiles and more than 2,200 drones at the country.
The website noted that this was the first time that an Iron Dome battery had been sent to another country. The deployment was ordered by Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu after a call with the Emirati president Mohammed bin Zayed.
The U.S. and Israel began its military operations against Iran at the end of February. Since then, numerous neighboring countries have been targeted by Iran missile and drone strikes. Iran has also sought to retaliate by targeting oil and natural gas infrastructure throughout the region.
Although President Trump has repeatedly announced cease fires, hostilities throughout the region have continued. The ongoing conflict has effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20 percent of the world’s oil supply is transported, creating an emerging energy crisis.
