At least two teachers at Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) have urged students to try and persuade their parents to vote “yes” in a referendum that would redistrict Virginia from a state with 6 Democrat congressional seats and 5 Republican seats to a very likely 10-1 Democrat advantage state, according to Kelly Sadler at the Washington Times.

Sadler, writing a column for the outlet, said that when she picked up her twin boys from school at FCPS, “In both of their civics classes that day, taught by two different teachers in Fairfax County Public Schools, they were urged to go home and persuade their parents to vote yes on the measure to make Virginia’s maps ‘as fair as they can be,’ to ‘stop Donald Trump at all costs.'”

The ballot measure in Virginia asks voters, “Should the Constitution of Virginia be amended to allow the General Assembly to temporarily adopt new congressional districts to restore fairness in the upcoming elections, while ensuring Virginia’s standard redistricting process resumes for all future redistricting after the 2030 census?” and then asks them to answer “yes” or “no.”

The language of the question has been heavily criticized online, with conservatives pointing to the wording “restore fairness” as a misnomer. Currently, Virginia’s state delegation for Congress is six Democrat seats and five Republican seats.

The district breakdown is relatively similar to the voting demographic of Virginia, which voted 52 percent for Kamala Harris and 46 percent for Donald Trump. However, if the referendum is passed, a map proposed by the Democrat-controlled state legislature will likely go into place, which expands the influence of Democrat-heavy areas in northern Virginia. The result will likely be a 10 Democrat to one Republican seat in Congress in the upcoming midterm elections.
