Delighted to see Foden back in his best position for England (sitting on the bench). If there has ever been a player who has earned at least 44 caps for England whilst contributing less, I’d love to hear who that is.
Iain, West Mids
For me, a far more interesting team. Dan Burn must feel disappointed, but Bowen for ineffectual Foden makes complete sense.

Villa Park has not hosted a senior men’s England game for 20 years while it’s 19 years since the Three Lions last played at Anfield.
Should Latvia at home on a Monday night in March have been moved away from Wembley for somewhere else in the country?
By the way, England’s next home World Cup qualifier against Andorra on 6 September will have to be played away from the national stadium.
That’s because Coldplay are performing a series of concerts at Wembley Stadium in late August and early September.

Tuchel rings changespublished at 18:37 Greenwich Mean Time
England v Latvia (19:45 GMT)
Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at WembleyEngland head coach Thomas Tuchel has given a familiar face a chance to revive his England career by giving Chelsea captain Reece James his first start since 2022.
Tuchel is a huge admirer of the 25-year-old who was a key element of the German’s Chelsea side that won the Champions League in 2021, and has wasted no time in bringing him back into the fold after he recovered from the latest in a succession of hamstring injuries.
If James can stay fit and impress, there is every chance he can nail down the right-back spot, although he can also play on the left.
West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen will get his opportunity to stake a claim as on right flank as he replaces Manchester City’s Phil Foden, who disappointed against Albania, with Tuchel admitting he wanted more.
Tuchel is also keen to see what Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers can offer, so he gets a start this evening.

On the bench for Latvia is a former West Ham youth goalkeeper who was nicknamed ‘King Kong’ due to his 6ft 7in frame.
“When he came to West Ham we were like ‘wow this guy’s a beast’,” says England midfielder Declan Rice about Rihards Matrevics.
“We’d go to Nando’s in Romford and he’d have to duck down to get underneath the door, he’s that tall!”

Mark Sowton: Is the perfect score 4-0? Any less would be deemed poor against the world’s No 140. Any more ruins the spectacle of a competitive game?

Chelsea captain missed much of last season after undergoing hamstring surgery and has also missed a chunk of this campaign with a similar issue.
Now he’s back in England’s starting XI.
“It was lonely and frustrating,” James told BBC Sport in January about his injury issues.

Big night for Rogerspublished at 18:26 Greenwich Mean Time
England v Latvia (19:45 GMT)
What a huge night for Morgan Rogers.
The 22-year-old’s previous three appearances for his country have all come as a substitute.
Rogers is rewarded for playing a key role in Aston Villa’s impressive run to the quarter-finals of both the Champions League and the FA Cup.

Quality passing rules: Foden…why? He can’t play on the wing and isn’t better than Bellingham, so you can’t play him in the centre. Made to look average at best by Albania.

‘Tuchel wants to see more from Foden’published at 18:09 Greenwich Mean Time
England v Latvia (19:45 GMT)
Ian Dennis
BBC Radio 5 Live senior football reporter at WembleyI think Thomas Tuchel wants to see a little bit more from Phil Foden – if he plays. He wants to see a better connection between Foden and Jude Bellingham in the No 10 role.
Thomas Tuchel is impatient. He wants to implement his style of football quite quickly but it will take time because they have had a limited amount of time on the training field.

Should Phil Foden start tonight? Is it time to give Morgan Gibbs-White his first England start? What’s your verdict of England under Thomas Tuchel so far?
And is it time to shake-up World Cup qualifying? England’s group features teams ranked 32nd, 65th, 140th and 171st in the world.
Should the Three Lions be facing sterner tests before the serious business starts in 15 months time?
You know the drill. Send all your England thoughts this way.

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi is also hopeful ofreturning to the side following his omission against Albania last Friday.

‘Phoney war’published at 18:02 Greenwich Mean Time
England v Latvia (19:45 GMT)
Who will provide Thomas Tuchel with his first big test as England boss? It’s unlikely to be Latvia, who are 136 places below the Three Lions in Fifa’s rankings.
This should be a comfortable night for the hosts whose next World Cup qualifier after this is against Andorra – who are ranked even lower in 171st.
“The thing about this calendar year is that it’s a phoney war because England will not be tested in the qualifying group with the exception of going away to Tirana to play Albania and Belgrade to play Serbia,” says BBC Radio 5 Live senior football reporter Ian Dennis.

England v Latvia (19:45 GMT)
In 444 days time the first match of the 2026 World Cup will be getting under way in Mexico City.
Barring a catastrophe, Thomas Tuchel and England will be there.
Tonight, the road to North America continues with a first ever meeting with Latvia. That’s the same Latvia who are ranked 140th in the world.
