On Tuesday night, California voters approved Proposition 50, a sweeping ballot initiative that could reshape the political landscape heading into next year’s fight for control of the US House of Representatives.

According to Fox News, Proposition 50 temporarily suspends the state’s independent redistricting commission, handing authority back to the Democrat-dominated legislature in Sacramento. The move could create up to five new Democratic-leaning congressional districts, significantly altering the national political map.

Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom, who championed the measure and is widely seen as a potential 2028 Democratic presidential contender, celebrated the outcome. “Donald Trump poked the bear. And the bear roared back,” Newsom said after the results came in.

The governor framed Proposition 50 as a necessary countermeasure to GOP redistricting efforts in Republican-led states such as Texas, where lawmakers recently approved maps that could yield five new right-leaning House seats.

The approval of Proposition 50 is part of a larger tug-of-war between Democrats and Republicans over mid-decade redistricting. The GOP is pursuing new maps in states it controls to solidify its narrow House majority ahead of the 2026 midterms.

Newsom and national Democrats warned that failure to pass Proposition 50 would have been a major setback.

Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chair Rep. Suzan DelBene (D-WA) celebrated the victory, saying Californians “sent a strong and clear message” against Republican efforts to “rig the 2026 election.”

Republicans, however, blasted Proposition 50 as a partisan power grab. Rep. Richard Hudson, chair of the National Republican Congressional Committee, dismissed the Democrats’ move as an act of desperation.

“No matter how Democrats redraw the lines to satisfy Gavin Newsom’s power grab, they can’t redraw their record of failure,” Hudson said. “Even under this new map, Republicans have clear opportunities to flip seats because Californians are fed up with Democrat chaos.”

California’s move comes amid a broader redistricting surge across the country. Missouri and Texas have already approved GOP-leaning maps, while North Carolina’s Republican legislature passed a map likely to add another conservative seat. Indiana, Florida, and Ohio are also moving toward similar efforts.

On the Democratic side, Maryland, Virginia, and Illinois are considering changes that could bolster their party’s representation. Unlike those states, however, California required voter approval to transfer redistricting power back to the legislature, making the fight over Proposition 50 one of the most expensive and closely watched in the nation. Campaigns for and against the measure raised hundreds of millions of dollars, flooding the airwaves with ads.
