(LifeSiteNews) — The apostolic nuncio to Poland conferred the traditional rite of the sacrament of Confirmation on Saturday, as one of the few bishops around the world to now confer the sacrament according to the older rite.

Archbishop Antonio Guido Filipazzi confirmed 50 Catholics in the Camaldolese Church, a parish church in Warsaw, Poland, Rorate Caeli reported on Monday. He was also present for the offering of the Traditional Latin Mass.

Such a celebration of the traditional rite of Confirmation is now an extraordinary occurrence. After Pope Francis enforced severe restrictions upon the celebration of the Traditional Latin Mass (TLM) via Traditionis Custodes, the Vatican issued a Responsa in December 2021 further restricting the traditional sacraments.

The document specifically ruled out bishops granting permission for the use of the Pontificale Romanum, which contains the sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Orders. However, there have since been reported instances of bishops granting canonically erected communities, such as the FSSP, permission to administer traditional rite confirmations.

The Vatican’s 2021 Responsa also stipulated that diocesan bishops may only grant permission to administer the other traditional sacraments, found in the Rituale Romanum, and that this permission is only to be granted in “canonically erected personal parishes,” such as those of the Institute of Christ the King (ICKSP), the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter (FSSP), or the Institute of the Good Shepherd (IBP).
