(LifeSiteNews) — A total of 90 organizations have now demanded that the Canadian federal government stop a planned expansion of euthanasia to those with mental illness.

Multiple disability, mental health, and other groups recently sent letters to Prime Minister Mark Carney, his Health Minister Marjorie Michel, and Justice Minister Sean Fraser, calling for Bill C-7, which seeks to expand the deadly practice, to be quashed.

Combined, the groups say that vulnerable Canadians, in specific, those with disabilities, are at risk should euthanasia be expanded, noting that support for those with mental health issues is not adequate.

Overall, the groups are asking that people with mental illnesses be permanently excluded from accessing Canada’s “Medical Assistance in Dying” (MAID) regime, as it’s known.

Currently, a parliamentary committee of MPs as well as senators is looking into the potential expansion of assisted suicide in Canada next year.

The deadly practice has become so prolific in Canada that doctors are approving the procedure in coffee shop parking lots, as reported by LifeSiteNews.

In 2021, the federal government under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expanded euthanasia from killing “terminally ill” patients to allowing the chronically ill to qualify after the passage of Bill C-7. Since then, the government has sought to include those suffering solely from mental illness.

In February 2024, the federal government delayed the mental illness expansion until 2027 after pushback from pro-life, medical, and mental health groups, as well as most of Canada’s provinces.

As reported by LifeSiteNews, Canada’s Catholic bishops have said they “support” Bill C-218, which is a Conservative bill that would stop the expansion of assisted suicide.

In a recent letter to Carney, Cardinal Frank Leo of Toronto urged the PM to allow a “free vote” for all Liberal MPs on Bill C-218, although the PM recently doubled down on the idea that all his MPs would tote the party’s pro-abortion and pro-euthanasia line.

Some provinces, such as Alberta, as reported by LifeSiteNews, will soon be placing strong limits on assisted suicide.

Euthanasia is now the sixth-highest cause of death in Canada, after it was not listed in Statistics Canada’s top 10 leading causes of death from 2019 to 2022.
