A New York City woman who was arrested for making threats to kill President Donald Trump was quietly released in late August by Obama-appointed Chief US District Judge James Boasberg. Her release came after a US Magistrate judge denied Jones bond over the repeated threats she made on Trump’s life on social media.

As conditions of the release, 50-year-old Nathalie Rose Jones was ordered to have a GPS monitor fitted and meet with her New York City psychiatrist no later than 5 pm on August 27. Jones has been charged with threatening to kill, kidnap or injure the president and transmitting kidnapping threats using interstate commerce.

In a bond hearing on August 26, Boasberg said that while he was concerned by the “oddly specific” threats Jones allegedly posted, federal prosecutors had not met their burden to keep Jones detained pending trial, per WUSA. “If she had a gun with her this case is easy. But the question is, why shouldn’t we consider this the rantings of someone with a mental illness with no ability to carry this out?”

Jones allegedly has schizophrenia, per Law and Crime, and began making threats on social media on August 2. The DOJ said it was the posts she made on Facebook that caught the attention of law enforcement.

One post from August 6 stated, “I am willing to sacrificially kill this POTUS by disemboweling him and cutting out his trachea with Liz Cheney and all The Affirmation present.” Another post just over a week later, allegedly meant for Defense Secretary Pete HEgseth, read, “please arrange the arrest and removal ceremony of POTUS Trump as a terrorist on the American People from 10-2pm at the White House on Saturday, August 16th, 2025.”

In a “voluntary” interview with the Secret Service on August 15, Jones allegedly said she would kill Trump at “the compound” and that she had a “bladed object” she would use to “carry out her mission of killing” Trump. She also stated her desire to “avenge all the lives lost during the Covid-19 pandemic,” which she blamed on Trump.

A friend wrote in a letter of support for her release, “In my opinion, Nathalie Jones is not the kind of person who would be likely to physically harm anyone. Certainly, she should never be expected to carry out an angry threat against anyone. While she has had mental health issues throughout her life, they have never, to my knowledge, resulted in violent physical action.”

Another friend from her former state of Indiana wrote that Jones was “open about her schizophrenia” and it “seemed she had it under control with her medication,” and that she “could never really physically hurt anyone.”

The DOJ said that Jones was a “clear danger to others,” and her “threatening statements constitute ‘true threats,’ and her criminal conduct is not protected by the First Amendment.”

“[Jones] contends that she is not a danger to the community. This could not be farther from the truth. Defendant is the exact type of person that should be detained pending trial. She displays a penchant for violence, as displayed through her threats towards the POTUS. She does not care about the consequences of her statements and actions, as shown by her brazen decision to drive to Washington, DC, the day after telling law enforcement she would take the POTUS’s life. And she has mental health issues, which could affect her ability to exhibit self-control or cause her to discount the dangerousness of her actions going forward.”

Jones was arrested in Washington, DC after she traveled there for a protest. US Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro said at the time, “She did come from New York to Washington, DC and she has been threatening and calling for the removal of the president. And even worse, as she got to DC, her threats were on Facebook and Instagram, and she continued to call the president a terrorist and was working to have him eliminated.”
