(LifeSiteNews) — A special report by the United Nations signals a serious move to have the “surrogacy” industry criminalized – as a form of human trafficking. The report, due to be presented to the U.N. General Assembly in October, destroys the well-marketed image of surrogacy – revealing the true nature of an industry monetizing the rental of wombs and the mail order of babies.

“Commercial surrogacy, which accounts for the overwhelming majority of surrogacy cases globally, constitutes the sale of children, which is a crime” says the report of the U.N. special rapporteur, noting also that “Surrogacy arrangements can amount to or resemble slavery.”

The awful truth of this diabolical trade is explained in the report, which has been summarized in a series of tweets by Lexi Ellingsworth of StopSurrogacyNowUK:

Published yesterday, with 120 submissions and discussions with 78 experts, the report from @UNSRVAW on #surrogacy will be presented to the General Assembly in October.

Ellingsworth’s U.K.-based campaign is one of several worldwide which seek the recognition of “surrogacy” as a criminal enterprise which replaces motherhood with a rental agreement and whose business model is the sale of babies to anyone – including child sex offenders.

The jargon of human degradation

Ellingsworth also points out that this diabolical trade has – as with the equally dehumanizing “trans” industry – produced a distorted vocabulary to market its evil trade as an exercise in human rights. The womb rental/baby sale business claims to be enabling parenthood for victims of “social infertility” – which Ellingsworth says brackets “same sex couples or single men” with “couples who are past normal childbearing years.”

Ellingsworth adds the report clarifies the equally dishonest term of “social surrogacy” – promoting the outsourcing of pregnancy to women kept in slave like conditions – by “a woman who does not want to be pregnant herself.”

This vital report shows the devastating impact on the family represented by this evil industry. Replacing motherhood with an outsourced transaction, it reduces family life to a mail-order business in a process which includes the automatic abortion of unwanted babies.

Automatic abortion

The report details how surrogacy agencies offer prospective parents – including single men, “trans” men and women, and same-sex couples – the option to have the unborn baby killed if it does not meet their requirements.

“Girls can also be victims of sex-selective abortion,” the report states on page 17, adding, “as surrogacy contracts sometimes include clauses for ‘selective reduction’ based on the sex of the child.”

Yet the horrors do not stop there. The report continues: “A similar situation exists for children with disabilities.” Citing a 2019 study on “Gestational surrogacy,” the U.N. report says “There are even surrogacy agencies that promise that ‘if the imperfection manifests later in the pregnancy, interruption of the pregnancy is guaranteed by abortion.’”

This is a practice endorsed by “conservative” U.S. politicians, such as the homosexualist Dave Rubin. As LifeSiteNews columnist Jonathon van Maren reported in 2022, Rubin said he and his “husband” would abort the baby they had ordered and paid for – if it showed any signs of disability.

Van Maren concluded:

Dave Rubin is not an ally. He is a man who would ask a woman whose womb he rented to have the child she was carrying – that he had purchased – suctioned out of her, or dismembered, because the child was disabled.

We should not ignore this. It is public advocacy of not only surrogacy and the commodifying of children, but the killing of “imperfect” children.

Sale of babies to sex offenders

The horrific nature of this trade is revealed in the U.N. report, which notes the submission of U.K.-based Surrogacy Concern that “There have been reports of sex offenders commissioning children for surrogacy.”

There have been more than mere reports. The baby trade is open to anyone who will pay – meaning pedophiles can and do buy babies – and have even crowdfunded the money to do so:

Pedophiles can even buy babies from other pedophiles who run “surrogacy” agencies catering to sexual extremists:

The owner of one of Europe’s largest surrogacy firms is under investigation after being accused of baby trafficking and sexually assaulting a young employee.

José Prados, whose firm specializes in LGBTQIA surrogacy, is also a convicted pedophile.https://t.co/yH0QZYDO3u

The man-made horrors never stop in this diabolical business. As Katy Faust of the Christian pro-child and pro-family Them Before Us pointed out in April, surrogacy is “the pedophiles’ pathway to parenthood.”

It is a lucrative and international criminal trade, which the U.N. report says was valued at “$14.5 billion in 2023.” It adds this sick business “is projected to reach $99.75 billion by 2033.”

Yet there are now serious steps towards criminalizing this obscene business – worldwide. Last year, even the EU’s legal arm began to recognize the grave evil of the surrogacy trade. As LifeSiteNews reported, the October 2024 report for the EU Agency for Criminal Justice Cooperation recognized “Cross border surrogacy … can lead to human trafficking and the sale of children.”

As the UN report notes: “Except in the United States, surrogacy agencies are primarily involved in cross-border arrangements.” The U.S. permits domestic commercial surrogacy – paying directly for babies-to-order, but the high costs are driving cheaper options across borders worldwide.

Details of a global baby trafficking business

The harrowing reality of the lucrative globalized trafficking of babies are revealed in detail in the report. With prices of around a tenth of the cost of buying babies in the U.S., “surrogate parents” are shopping in cheaper human marketplaces from South America to Ukraine – and South East Asia.

The report shows how “gestational carriers” – never called “mothers” – are kept in slave-like conditions:

In Argentina, poorer women were reportedly recruited on social media to become surrogates in conditions that prosecutors described as the “reduction to servitude.”

It adds:

In Ukraine, women were reportedly forced to live in small, overcrowded apartments, without access to hot water and with severe limitations on their freedom of movement.

The report says “the profit-oriented behavior underpinning surrogacy service provision” is a likely driver of human trafficking, and describes surrogacy as creating a market in “forced reproductive labor” in China, for example.

The report cites news from Georgia and Thailand, showing how “at least 100 female victims were reportedly kept in confinement and forced to give up their eggs after being artificially stimulated to ovulate.”

It shows that “[e]ven in countries where surrogacy is regulated, such as Greece, risks persist. Foreign women have reportedly been trafficked into the country to serve as surrogate mothers.”

Reports from Cambodia “have emerged of women being detained and forced to give birth in handcuffs.”

This new U.N. report correctly designates the surrogacy industry as a criminal enterprise fueled – in the main – by bargain hunting baby shoppers from Western nations.

The report calls for the prosecution and asset seizure of all those involved in the surrogacy trade. It recommends that member states “hold surrogacy agencies, intermediaries and others that profit from or facilitate surrogacy arrangements accountable, including through criminal sanctions and asset confiscations”

The report recommends that a global effort be undertaken to completely abolish the “surrogacy” industry, urging that, “At the international level, [we] take steps towards eradicating surrogacy in all its forms.”

Finally, there is some really good news. The end of the organized international crime of surrogacy is drawing near. This would be a glorious victory for the dignity of human life over the reduction of women and babies to consumer goods and services. The fact that the U.N. – with its own track record on abortion – is appalled by this trade is a further encouraging sign of the return of the essential value of human life to a world dominated by consumer nihilism.
