Trump to require truck drivers to be proficient in English
The White House said that the existing federal standard mandating that commercial drivers read and speak English “has not been enforced.”
President Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order on Monday that requires commercial truck drivers to be proficient in English. This comes after Trump signed an executive order designating English as the official language of the United States.
A White House document on the order, obtained by Breitbart, stated, “President Trump believes that English is a non-negotiable safety requirement for professional drivers, as they should be able to read and understand traffic signs, communicate with traffic safety officers, border patrol, agricultural checkpoints, and cargo weight-limit station personnel, and provide and receive feedback and directions in English.”
The order will see Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy directed to “rescind and replace guidance to strengthen inspection procedures for compliance with English proficiency requirements.” He will also be tasked with evaluating the protocols for verifying the authenticity of commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs). Additionally, Duffy will be directed to improve the working conditions of truckers through “additional administrative, regulatory, or enforcement actions.”
The White House said that the existing federal standard mandating that commercial drivers read and speak English “has not been enforced.” The order “mandates revising out-of-service criteria to ensure drivers violating English proficiency rules are placed out-of-service, enhancing roadway safety.”
Trump signed an executive order in March titled, “Designating English as the Official Language of The United States,” which states that English has been the nation’s language since “the founding of our Republic.”
“Our Nation’s historic governing documents, including the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, have all been written in English. It is therefore long past time that English is declared as the official language of the United States. A nationally designated language is at the core of a unified and cohesive society, and the United States is strengthened by a citizenry that can freely exchange ideas in one shared language.”
