President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that India and Pakistan have agreed to a ceasefire in the recent conflict that has broken out between the two countries. The two nuclear powers agreed to put their weapons down after the most fighting that has taken place between the countries in years.

Trump posted on Truth Social, “After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

After Trump’s announcement, officials from both countries confirmed the ceasefire. Additionally, in a statement, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said, “Over the past 48 hours, Vice President Vance and I have engaged with senior Indian and Pakistani officials, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif, External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir, and National Security Advisors Ajit Doval and Asim Malik. I am pleased to announce the Governments of India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and to start talks on a broad set of issues at a neutral site.”

“We commend Prime Ministers Modi and Sharif on their wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship in choosing the path of peace,” Rubio added.

According to the New York Times, the Indian government contradicted Trump and said that the ceasefire deal between the two countries was brokered by India as well as Pakistan directly. Earlier in April, there was a terror attack in the India-controlled area of Kashmir’s Pahalgam region. India said that Pakistan supported the attack, which killed 25 Indians.

There had been an escalation in response to the attack, with the two countries using drones on a large scale. Both countries had been under pressure to de-escalate the conflict, as both sides have nuclear war capabilities.
