A Texas A&M student was booted out of a lecture hall after objecting to gender ideology being taught during a children’s literature course at the college. Video of the interaction has gone viral online after it was shared by Texas Republican State Rep. Brian Harrison on Monday.

Footage of the interaction showed Professor Melissa McCoul being confronted by a student about material surrounding gender ideology being taught in a class about children’s literature. The student interrupted the lecture, voicing concerns that what was being taught went against executive orders from President Donald Trump as well as her religious beliefs.

“This also goes against, not only myself, but a lot of people’s religious beliefs,” the student said in the video. “And so I am not going to participate in this because it’s not legal.” McCoul then asked if the student was implicating that the material being taught was “false.” The student replied, “Yes.”

The professor went on to claim that what she was saying was true, and that the student could not stop her from teaching the material. “Because I do have the legal and ethical authority [and] professional expertise in this classroom,” McCoul added. “It’s time for you to leave.”

The student said that she has met with the Texas A&M president over the matter.

The class was centered on getting students to “think critically about what [children’s literature] can tell us about how we (and others) understand childhood,” per class materials reviewed by the Daily Wire.

Some Rate My Professor ratings from McCoul’s profile include, “ENGL 360 was far from a children’s literature course. Dr. McCoul consistently pushed her own political agenda and her grading was subjective.”

Another past student wrote of one of her classes, “I have no words for this class. Firstly, she heavily pushed her LGBTQ ideology on students and it directly affects grades on assignments if you word something a way she doesn’t like. Secondly, she will force participation on students and monitor their every move like we are in elementary school during group discussions. Worst professor of all time.”

One student detailed of the course, “This course described as ‘Survey of historical and contemporary lit. for adolescents, including…fantasy, domestic fiction, and the problem novel’. But out of the 15 books required, all but 2-3 of them were centered around teens dealing with being queer, or about a teen becoming non-religious, or a teen abandoning God to worship Karl Marx. Not cool.”

A college official told reporters, “We are aware of an isolated incident in which a summer course’s content was misaligned with the course curriculum. The college took steps in collaboration with faculty to ensure all course content aligns with the course curriculum moving forward.”
