Bethell c Kusal Mendis b Shanaka 13 (Eng 38-2)
Dasun Shanaka has England’s young gun!
Jacob Bethell backs away early to a bouncer from the Sri Lanka captain, looking to cut uppishly over the in-field.
He only manages to offer a faint edge through to Kusal Mendis behind the stumps.
The 22-year-old had driven the first ball of the over through the covers, but is now heading off the field.

Eshan Malinga into the attack and it’s a successful first over.
It goes for just three runs, with Jacob Bethell taking two through point then running a single off a mis-timed pull.

Sri Lanka turn to spin with Dunith Wellalage, who didn’t play in the first match of the series.
Jos Buttler gets yet another boundary through backward point, reverse sweeping the slow bowler.
Wellalage’s final ball then beats everything and just about makes the rope ahead of the chasing fielder – that’s four in the byes column.

Eng 21-1published at 2 overs
Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka puts himself on at the other end, and cuts the ball between the body and bat of Jos Buttler.
He goes up for an appeal for caught behind, but that likely clipped the top of the pad and after a moment’s pause he chooses not to review his own delivery.
Buttler follows-up by cracking the next ball through backward point for four, before new batter Jacob Bethell clubs through mid-wicket for his first boundary, with both shots beating the despairing dives of fielders.

A score like that is what we call ‘a pinch of Salt’.

Salt c Mishara b Pathirana 1 (Eng 10-1)

Sri Lanka have removed the dangerous Phil Salt in the first over.
The opener tries to guide Matheesha Pathirana’s last delivery through the off side with a horizontal bat.
It’s a slower delivery and pretty wide, and the ball clips off the upper edge of Salt’s bat and flies to Kamil Mishara at slip for a comfortable catch.

Consecutive fours at the start of Jos Buttler’s innings!
He times both beautifully, guiding Matheesha Pathirana’s deliveries through backward point and cover point.
Flat, fast and to the ropes.

A few of these drops have been so bad, one can’t help but wonder whether there’s an external factor, either the lights or field quality in the outfield perhaps? Or maybe the squad just need some catching practice…

CricViz analystSri Lanka’s 189-4 today is their joint highest score against England in T20Is, alongside their 189-5 batting first in Chattogram during the 2014 T20 World Cup.
England won that gave with four balls to spare, courtesy of an unbeaten 116 from Alex Hales.

BBC Test Match Special commentatorWell Archer came back well in the last over, leaving England needing more than Friday but it’s a very gettable target and credit again to Rashid and Dawson.

Image source, Getty ImagesAnyone know if Sam Curran has a stock ball? Seems to be trying for a wicket every ball and has talent but not enough consistency.
Richard Caswell, Exeter
England cannot win the T20 World Cup if Curran and Jamie Overton are in the bowling lineup.

BBC Test Match Special commentatorBad drop from Tom Banton again, on a night when England haven’t been as sharp as they should and can be on that front.

Rathnayake c Bethell b Archer 40 (SL 187-5)
Slower ball from Jofra Archer out of the back of the hand and Jacob Bethell’s hands are as safe as houses in the deep.
Pavan Rathnayake cannot quite time it and Bethell jogs in to claim it as calm as you like.
