Sen Josh Hawley proposes rebate checks up to $2,400 for families after US hits $150 billion in 2025 tariff revenue
Republican Senator Josh Hawley has introduced new legislation that would provide American families with rebate checks of up to $2,400, with President Trump expressing support.
Republican Senator Josh Hawley has introduced new legislation that would provide American families with rebate checks of up to $2,400, funded by revenue generated from President Donald Trump’s tariffs. This comes as the US has brought in $150 billion in tariff revenue so far in 2025.
The proposal would be similar to the stimulus checks issued during the COVID-19 pandemic. The idea of issuing a rebate has been supported by President Trump.
“We’re thinking about a little rebate,” Trump told reporters last week, according to the Daily Mail. “But the big thing we want to do is pay down debt. But we’re thinking about a rebate.”
The proposal, named the “American Worker Rebate Act,” would offer a refundable tax credit, and payments could be issued as early as this year if the measure were to pass Congress. The rebate amounts would vary based on income.
“Like President Trump proposed, my legislation would allow hard-working Americans to benefit from the wealth that Trump’s tariffs are returning to this country,” Hawley said in a statement.
The proposal comes as the Treasury Department announced this month that tariff revenue has totaled about $28 billion in July, up $1 billion from June’s figures.
Trump recently reaffirmed that his administration will not extend the August 1 deadline for tariffs targeting dozens of countries. “The August first deadline is the August first deadline,” the president posted on Truth Social on Wednesday. “It stands strong and will not be extended.”
Trump also announced a 25 percent tariff on goods from India and warned of a “penalty” for purchasing military and energy equipment from Russia. A similar rebate concept was floated earlier this year to return savings generated by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
