Poilievre sounds alarm over Canada's dire future in 2040 under continued Liberal rule

According to Poilievre, the findings show that if Canada stays on its current Liberal-led path, the country could be headed for “a total meltdown, a societal breakdown.”

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is warning Canadians that a grim future awaits if the Liberals are given another term in office following the “lost Liberal decade” under Justin trudeau, citing a new government report that paints a disturbing picture of life in 2040.

Speaking Tuesday after releasing the party’s costed election platform, Poilievre pointed to a new government document that warns about the rapid collapse of social mobility across the country. “The report paints a terrifying picture of a spiral of economic depression and cost inflation,” Poilievre told the crowd

According to Poilievre, the findings show that if Canada stays on its current Liberal-led path, the country could be headed for “a total meltdown, a societal breakdown.”

The report he referenced comes from Policy Horizons Canada, a little-known government office created in 1996 under Employment and Social Development Canada. The office says it is tasked with studying the “emerging policy landscape” and “building foresight literacy and capacity in the public service.”

The document, titled Future Lives: Social Mobility In Question, was released on April 19. It warns that in just 15 years, Canadians could see their living standards fall so badly that some might turn to illegal hunting and foraging just to survive. “People may start to hunt, fish and forage on public lands and waterways without reference to regulations,” it added, saying it was hard to believe that the document was talking about Canada.

The report also outlines that “Canada may become a less attractive destination for migrants” as opportunities dry up, and that many citizens could flee the country for better prospects elsewhere.

“Many people in Canada assume ‘following the rules’ and ‘doing the right thing’ will lead to a better life. However things are changing,” the document states. “Hardly anyone believes they can build a better life for themselves or their children in this future.”

Despite the alarming scenarios raised, Liberal leader Mark Carney brushed them off when asked at a campaign event in King City, Ontario. When a reporter mentioned Poilievre’s concerns — including warnings about Canadians foraging for food — Carney laughed and said, “Is that right? Wow.”

He later tried to downplay the situation, claiming, “Well they won’t have to forage for food,” and promising that he would govern for all Canadians if elected.

“Absolutely, we’ll work for all Canadians,” he said, according to the Western Standard.

A spokesperson for Policy Horizons told CBC News that the report “is an exploration of a potential future,” and insisted it “is not a forecast nor a commentary on current or future policies.” They stressed that it is meant to help the government plan for possible disruptions.
