The home of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was hit by gunfire Sunday morning just days after it was targeted with a Molotov cocktail.

No one was injured in either attack.

San Francisco Police said that the shots were fired around 3 a.m. Sunday from a passing car. Authorities were able to track the vehicle to Amanda Tom, 25, and Muhamad Tarik Hussein, 23, who were both charged with negligent discharge of a firearm. Police did not say whether Altman’s home was purposefully targeted or if the shooting was at random.

The other attack took palce on Friday at about 4:15 a.m., when police said that someone threw an “incendiary destructive device” at Altman’s home. In that incident, the device set an exterior fence on fire.

Later, around 5:10 a.m., a man matching the description of the suspect who threw the device showed up at OpenAI’s headquarters threatening to burn the business down. Police arrested a 20-year-old man at the scene, and charges are pending.

Following the Friday incident, Altman published a lengthy blog post that included a photo of his son.

“Here is a photo of my family. I love them more than anything,” the post begins. “Images have power, I hope. Normally we try to be pretty private, but in this case I am sharing a photo in the hopes that it might dissuade the next person from throwing a Molotov cocktail at our house.”

The post then mentions a New Yorker profile from April 6 that Altman calls “incendiary” insinuating that it might have motivated the attacks. “Words have power too,” Altman wrote. The article details some of the turmoil around Altman’s aborted firing by the OpenAI board in 2023.

Altman then shares his views on AI, saying that it “will be the most powerful tool for expanding human capability and potential that anyone has ever seen,” while acknowledging that “the fear and anxiety about AI is justified.”
