To mark the 53rd anniversary of Title IX, the Department of Education is announcing investigations into two apparent violations of the federal law protecting women’s spaces and sports.

Title IX was enacted into law on June 23 in 1972, so President Donald Trump’s Department of Education will celebrate June as Title IX month.

Secretary of Education Linda McMahon is overseeing investigations into two reputed Title IX violations said to have taken place under the Biden administration.

The Education Department will investigate the University of Wyoming for allowing a transgender-identifying male into the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.

Even though Kappa’s bylaws say only women can join the sorority, in fall of 2022, the University of Wyoming chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma was required to admit a biological male member who identifies as female.

Represented by Independent Women’s Forum, several sorority members sued the national Kappa branch.

The second investigation is into Jefferson County Public Schools in Colorado, which allowed its high school overnight accommodations to be determined by gender identity, rather than sex, leading to a male sharing a room with a female.

Joe and Serena Wailes revealed in 2023 that their 11-year-old daughter was assigned to share a bed with a boy who identifies as a transgender girl on an overnight school trip. Their story led other parents to come forward with similar allegations.

Protecting Title IX’s original intent has been a priority of the Trump Department of Education.

The Department of Education under the Biden-Harris administration issued new rules, reinterpreting Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, the law that bars discrimination on the basis of sex in education.

The rewrite would have changed the meaning of “sex” in Title IX to include “gender identity.”

The Biden administration withdrew the proposed rule at the end of December, in the face of receiving hundreds of thousands of critical public comments.
