Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

This is another example of where Villa are. Look at the squad they have got and look at their bench. They are now amassing a squad which can compete.

With this Paris St-Germain team it’s all about their work ethic and the ability to come together and carry out the tactics. They are tactically aware and they’re a team who are very well coached.

We played Rotherham five years ago and from there we ended up getting into the Premier League. The journey has been fantastic, so far.

This is Aston Villa’s first appearance in a quarter-final of this great competition since 1983.

This is significantly stepping it up against PSG.

Villa cannot beat PSG tonight by having 70% of the ball tonight – that’s not going to happen.

Villa will have to use all their quality in transitions to try and beat them.

But Villa have nothing to lose. It’s already a great season and everybody expects PSG to win. I think the pressure is very much on PSG tonight.

Unlike some Villa fans, I’m not feeling especially nervous. Having watched Villa my whole life and seen us play in the Championship, to be where we are today, playing at the very top level is amazing. A win would be incredible, a draw I’m happy, but above all I’m proud of this team and this club.

    Tom, a ‘relaxed’ Villa fan

As a Liverpool fan I think Villa are going to have to play their best games of the season to stand a chance. PSG are extremely good.

We have stadiums like this on the television, but it is different when you’re there.

I hope the reaction we had is different to what the Aston Villa players have! We have been to big stadiums covering Aston Villa, but this feels special.

While Borussia Dortmund haven’t won any of their five games against Barcelona (drawn two, lost three), they’ve only gone six consecutive European matches without beating an opponent against two other sides; one of which is another Spanish team (six v Real Madrid in 2024, along with seven v Rangers in 1999).

Barca and Dortmund actually faced each other in this year’s group stage, with Barcelona winning 3-2 away from home thanks to a late Ferran Torres winner.

Barcelona are unbeaten in their five meetings with Borussia Dortmund in European competition (won three, drawn two). Only against Lyon (eight), Napoli (six) and Werder Bremen (six) have they played more in Europe without losing.

One of this year’s favourites, against last year’s runners-up.

Barcelona are on a roll this season, four points clear at the top of La Liga after a draw with Real Betis at the weekend, and have won 18 of their last 22 matches.

Indeed, a quadruple is still on for the Champions League’s top scorers.

They’ll want to take a lead into their second leg in Germany next week as they hope to reach their first UCL semi-final since 2019.

As for Dortmund, they’ve been poor domestically, sitting eighth in the Bundesliga, five points off the top four.

But in this competition they’re formidable.

Dortmund’s only knockout loss in each of their past eight matches happened in last year’s final, against Real Madrid.

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, public enemy number one in these parts after his antics during the penalty shoot-out in the 2022 World Cup Final when Argentina beat France in Qatar, timed his entrance for the warm-up to coincide with PSG’s own keepers coming out.

It did not stop Martinez, who also brandished a Kylian Mbappe doll during Argentina’s triumphant World Cup homecoming in Buenos Aires, from receiving a storm of booing from the PSG “Ultras” behind the goal where he is going through his routine.

  14. Villa’s Champions League resultspublished at 19:26 British Summer Time

    Paris St-Germain v Aston Villa (20:00 BST)

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery, speaking to TNT Sports: “The challenge we have today, the biggest challenge we are going to face this season. We are ready and we’re feeling consistent in this way – today we have to get our best.

“We are going to play intelligently. Of course, it is going to be amazing – we are enjoying Champions league, but we want to do something more.

“Playing away, they have the opponents supporters helping them and trying to push [them], but we have our supporters here. We are going to be here focused on the match, and be connected through our connections and motivations.

“We want to write our history here with the players we have.”

As a nervous Villa fan, I’ll be honest and say I’d happily take a one-goal deficit from tonight back to Villa Park. I’d just like us to still be in the tie, come the second leg. Here’s hoping!

It is a glorious warm night here in Paris with conditions ideal for this Champions League quarter-final first leg.

The atmosphere is already being ramped up inside the Parc des Princes – and having sampled this stadium’s atmosphere earlier in the competitions when Manchester City were beaten 4-2, the pre-match show is usually something very special.

We are hitting form at the perfect time. Our squad is 99% fit. Only Ross Barkley isn’t fit and our real superstars are hitting form, the likes of Marcus Rashford, Marco Asensio and Axel Disasi.

There was a big gamble when we loaned these guys in January.

These guys have elevated us to a different level. Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio are a different class, they ooze class.

Rashford is a different guy to what he was at Manchester United. We are not afraid of anyone right now. Aston Villa were teetering on the end of oblivion a few years ago. Bring on anybody for us – we are confident.

  20. ‘It’s a big challenge for Villa and Emery’published at 19:13 British Summer Time

    Paris St-Germain v Aston Villa (20:00 BST)

    Julien Laurens
European football expert on BBC Radio 5 Live

For Unai Emery going back to Paris where he was a manager for two years – it’s a huge test tactically.

Emery’s best game for PSG was the 4-0 win in the first leg of that last-16 [against Barcelona in 2017] and then the worst game of his whole career was the 6-1 defeat in the second leg.

Tactically, he will have to find something because this PSG team for the last three months have played with so much flow.

It is a big challenge for Villa and Unai Emery needs to respond to what PSG can offer tonight.
