Canadian PM Mark Carney vows to allow minors to undergo sex changes if he wins April 28 election
“Access to health care in Canada is not a business, it is a fundamental right, and we will defend it for all Canadians, without exception,” Carney said.
Canadian Liberal Leader Prime Minister Mark Carney has pledged to defend sex change treatments for minors, describing the procedures as a “fundamental right” for all Canadians. Carney made the remarks during a recent press briefing in Alberta, when asked about the province’s proposed restrictions on sex changes drugs, to which he responded he would support them “without exception.”
“Canada is a mosaic, people can be who they are, they can love who they love,” said Carney. “Access to health care in Canada is not a business, it is a fundamental right, and we will defend it for all Canadians, without exception.”
The drugs are used to stop puberty in children who say they were born in the wrong bodies and should be the opposite sex. After time on puberty blockers, those children, then teens who have not gone through natural puberty, are given cross-sex hormones so that they develop the secondary sex characteristics of the opposite sex. This includes breasts for boys and facial hair for girls.
The combination of puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones can result in sterility and stops the individual from having normal sexual function for the rest of their lives. In boys, the growth of their genitals stops, meaning they never have an adult penis. Girls who take testosterone develop deeper voices, stronger jaw lines, and can suffer vaginal and uterine atrophy. None of this is reversible.
Reporters questioned Carney about whether the Liberals would step in to defend access to transgender medical treatments under the Canada Health Act, as reported by Juno News. Provinces like Alberta aim to deny minors access to controversial, life-altering treatments, including puberty blockers.
Under Alberta Bill 26, health professionals are prohibited from “performing sex reassignment surgeries on minors” and cannot prescribe puberty blockers to minors unless the patients are at least 16 years of age and have parental approval. Proponents of the bill believe that sex change treatments for children cause harm and irreversible damage, while critics allege without evidence that these treatments save the lives of gender dysphoric youth.
After Prime Minister Justin Trudeau resigned from Parliament in March, Carney, 59, took over as Canada’s leader. He has since entered the race to become the next Prime Minister of Canada and will face Conservative Party leader Pierre Polivierre, who has spoken out against child sex change treatments.
