Buckingham Palace was forced to swiftly correct an error on King Charles’s official social media account after a post misnamed his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.

The post, shared on X (formerly Twitter), initially referred to her as “The Queen Mother” rather than by her full and formal title, “Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.”

The Palace’s original message read: “The King has attended the Mey Highland Games in Caithness!

“First established in the village of Mey in 1970 to celebrate the 70th Birthday of The Queen Mother, The Mey Games have since become an annual tradition.”

Just one minute later, the post was edited to reflect the correct name: “The King has attended the Mey Highland Games in Caithness!

“First established in the village of Mey in 1970 to celebrate the 70th Birthday of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, The Mey Games have since become an annual tradition.”

The oversight caught the attention of royal watchers, as the King’s grandmother was never officially styled simply as “The Queen Mother.” The full title is used to distinguish her from her daughter, the late Queen Elizabeth II.

At the event over the weekend, the 76-year-old monarch attended the colourful annual festivities without Queen Camilla.

He was dressed in a red, blue and green tartan kilt, paired with a beige waistcoat and jacket.

At one point, he was seen sipping a whisky as he enjoyed the lively atmosphere, which included pipe bands, Highland dancing and athletics.

King Charles, like his late mother, has always had a deep affection for Scotland, spending many summers at Balmoral and regularly donning traditional Scottish dress during visits.

Under the corrected post on X, royal fans shared their appreciation for the Games and the legacy of the Queen Mother.

One wrote: “Happy Heavenly Birthday to Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.” Another added: “Such a beautiful tradition started by The Queen Mother, and amazing to see it still going strong.”

Although Camilla was not in attendance, King Charles was joined by his cousin Lady Sarah Chatto, daughter of Princess Margaret, along with her son Samuel and his girlfriend Eleanor Ekserdjian.

His Majesty became Chieftain of the Mey Highland Games in 2002, following the death of his grandmother, and has regularly attended the event as part of his summer break in Caithness.

The Mey Highland Games now operates as an independent charity and continues to take place on the first Saturday of August each year.
