BREAKING: Trump says he may meet with Iran at White House

“War’s very bad, there was no reason for this to be a war. There was no reason for Russia-Ukraine. A lot of wars, there was no reason for.”

US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that Iran’s leadership has expressed interest in meeting with him at the White House, following escalating conflict in the Middle East. Trump confirmed that Iranian officials had reached out, but questioned the timing.

“They want to meet, it’s a little late to meet, but they want to meet and they want to come to the White House. They’ll even come to the White House. So we’ll see, I may do that,” Trump told reporters. “It’s a shame it wasn’t done the easy way.”

Trump noted that his administration had previously offered Iran a favorable diplomatic deal before hostilities intensified. “Look, they should have made the deal, I had a great deal for them. Sixty days we talked about it and in the end they decided not to do it,” he said.

The president said he was scheduled to meet with his team in the White House’s war room, referencing the ongoing conflict and recent Iranian aggression. “I have a meeting in the war room in a little while, the situation room as some people call it. We’re going to meet, we’re going to see,” Trump said. “We’re in the midst of a terrible thing, I hate to see it. I hate to see all that death, so much death and destruction. But death primarily is what I hate to see.”

Trump, who has long opposed Iranian nuclear ambitions, said. “Iran can’t have a nuclear weapon. Too much devastation, and I believe they’d use it. That’s it, very simple, as far as I’m concerned,” he said.

When pressed by a reporter on whether he had made a final decision on possible US military involvement, Trump signaled that his approach remained flexible.

“I have ideas as to what to do but I haven’t made a final decision. I’ll make a final decision one second before it’s due,” he said. “Things change, especially with war, things change with the war. It can go from one extreme to the other.”

“War’s very bad, there was no reason for this to be a war. There was no reason for Russia-Ukraine. A lot of wars, there was no reason for.”

Pointing to a copy of the Declaration of Independence displayed in the room, Trump added, “You look right up there, the Declaration of Independence, and I say, I wonder if the Civil War—it would seem to me that maybe that could have been solved without losing 600,000 people.”

Trump added that he was not looking for a ceasefire, but instead was looking for a “victory” in the sense that he does not want Iran to have a nuclear weapon.

This is a breaking story.
