In a Truth Social post following the dismissal of Mike Waltz as National Security Advisor, President Donald Trump announced that Waltz would become Ambassador to the United Nations. Waltz will need to be confirmed by the Senate before taking the position.

“I am pleased to announce that I will be nominating Mike Waltz to be the next United States Ambassador to the United Nations,” Trump said of the former congressman who left his position to become National Security Advisor. “From his time in uniform on the battlefield, in Congress and, as my National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz has worked hard to put our Nation’s Interests first. I know he will do the same in his new role. In the interim, Secretary of State Marco Rubio will serve as National Security Advisor, while continuing his strong leadership at the State Department. Together, we will continue to fight tirelessly to Make America, and the World, SAFE AGAIN. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

The removal of Waltz, as well as his deputy Alex Wong, comes after Waltz took responsibility for the accidental addition of The Atlantic’s editor-in-chief, Jeffrey Goldberg, to a Signal messaging app group chat in which a then-forthcoming US attack on Yemeni Houthi rebels was discussed. “I take full responsibility. I built the group,” Waltz said after the snafu, speaking to Laura Ingrahm. “It’s embarrassing. We’re going to get to the bottom of it.”

Trump had previously nominated New York Rep. Elise Stefanik to be UN Ambassador, but her nomination was rescinded and she was sent back to the House after Trump became concerned about the slim GOP majority in that congressional body. Trump later gave an exclusive interview to Goldberg.
