President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that the US conducted a series of strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites, including on Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan.
Trump posted to Truth Social, “We have completed our very successful attack on the three Nuclear sites in Iran, including Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan. All planes are now outside of Iran air space. A full payload of BOMBS was dropped on the primary site, Fordow.”
“All planes are safely on their way home. Congratulations to our great American Warriors. There is not another military in the World that could have done this. NOW IS THE TIME FOR PEACE! Thank you for your attention to this matter.”
Following the post on Truth Social, the website appeared to crash, possibly due to a surge of traffic to Trump’s post on the platform.
The US appeared to be moving B-2 stealth bombers as well as refueling the aircraft in the Pacific ahead of the strikes, ABC News reported. Earlier this week, the president had said that he would be making a decision over next steps for the US in the Israel-Iran conflict within the next two weeks.
That timeframe was given to reporters at the White House on Thursday from White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, who said, quoting Trump, “Based on the fact that there’s a substantial chance of negotiations that may or may not take place with Iran in the near future, I will make my decision whether or not to go within the next two weeks.”
Over the course of the last week, after conflict between Iran and Israel came to a head, the president had reiterated that Iran could not get ahold of nuclear weapons as he has done so before. Leavitt said on Thursday in her comments about the two-week timeframe, “Nobody should be surprised by the President’s position that Iran absolutely cannot obtain a nuclear weapon. He has been unequivocally clear about this for decades, not just as president, not just as a presidential candidate, but also as a private citizen.”
Israel launched an attack against Iran earlier in the month, and Iran answered with its own retaliatory missile strikes, leading to heightened conflict in the region. Before the US strikes took place on Saturday, Israel had taken out many of the top leaders in the Iranian military as well as many of their military assets. However, Fordow, a uranium enrichment facility that is deep underground, was largely unscathed by the Israeli attacks, leading to the US ‘intervention.
Earlier this week, the president made a series of posts to Truth Social, calling on Iran to surrender. When asked by reporters if he was looking for a ceasefire in the conflict, Trump said a ceasefire was not good enough.
“I’m not asking for a ceasefire, we’re looking at better than a ceasefire,” Trump said on Monday evening. He added that he wants “a real end” to the conflict.
