“It’s been the honor of my life to represent the people of Burnaby central. Tonight they chose a new Member of Parliament and I wish them well,” Singh said.

NDP leader Jagmeet Singh is projeted to lose his Vancouver-area seat in a massive defeat on election night, marking a major setback for the New Democrats. Singh said he will step down as party leader as soon as an interim is appointed.

Singh, who has led the party since 2017, is trailing in a distant third behind Wade Chang and Conservative James Yan, in the riding of Burnady Central. The loss is a major blow not just for Singh personally but for the NDP nationally, as the party struggled on Monday to hold ground in key battlegrounds across the country.

Singh had been a major figure in Canadian politics over the past several years, most notoriously for propping up Liberal governments through confidence and supply agreements that was largely seen as a coalition government.

During his address to supporters, an emotional Singh thanked a cheering crowd, taking a moment to congratulate Carney, saying that he must “protect our country and its sovereignty from the threats of Donald Trump.”

“It’s been the honor of my life to represent the people of Burnaby Central. Tonight they chose a new member of Parliament and I wish them well,” Singh said.

Singh served as the leader for the party for nearly eight years: “i worked really hard to be worthy of this trust to live up to the legacy of this movement,” he said nearly through tears.
