BREAKING: President Trump jokes ‘I’d like to be pope’
Trump joked, “I’d like to be pope. That would be my number one choice.”
President Donald Trump suggested that Cardinal Timothy Dolan should be the next Pope when he was talking to reporters at the White House on Tuesday. He made the comments after he joked, “I’d like to be Pope.”
He was asked about his preference on who would be the next leader of the Catholic Church, to which Trump joked, “I’d like to be pope. That would be my number one choice.”
“No, I don’t know, I don’t have a preference,” Trump continued in a more serious tone. He then added, referring to Cardinal Timothy Dolan, “I must say, we have a cardinal out of a place called New York who is very good.”
After Trump made the joke about him becoming pope, a number of different AI-generated photos of Trump in the outfit usually worn by the leader of the faith popped up across social media.
The comments from Trump come after the death of Pope Francis, who passed away last week, and the president attended his funeral over the weekend. The Catholic Church is in the process of choosing the next pope and the conclave will begin on May 7. Many leaders from around the world came together for the funeral.
Pope Francis died at the age of 88 after spending a long stint at the hospital because of pneumonia. It was revealed after his death that he had not passed due to complications from the illness, but rather from a stroke that led to heart failure on Monday, April 21.
