Robert F Kennedy Jr has said that the Trump administration will be finding out by September what has caused a skyrocketing increase in autism in the United States.

“At your direction, we are going to know by September. We’ve launched a massive testing and research effort that’s going to involve hundreds of scientists from around the world,” Kennedy told President Doanld Trump in a Cabinet meeting open to the press, then adding, “By September we will know what has caused the autism epidemic and we will be able to eliminate those exposures.”

“Think of that. So it was 1-in-10,000 children had autism. Now it’s 1-in-31 … That’s a horrible statistic,” President Donald Trump responded, saying that there has to be something “artificial” behind it.

“There will be no bigger news conference than that … if you can come up with that answer where you stop taking something, you stop eating something, or maybe it’s a shot, but something’s causing it,” Trump added.

The comments from Trump and Kennedy come after the president signed an executive order to create the “Make America Healthy Again” Commission, with Kennedy and other officials working to get to the bottom of various chronic illnesses diagnosed in children such as asthma and autism.

There has been research done for years now trying to find out what is driving autism, but the direct cause remains unclear as researchers have looked into genetic as well as environmental factors.

There have been anecdotal reports of some parents being able to reverse some symptoms of autism in their children, however, there is no known cure all for the chronic illness. Earlier this year, CBS News reported that parents with a son who was non-verbal and diagnosed with autism saw results after their child started taking Leucovorin prescribed off-label, and is usually used to ease the side-effects of chemotherapy. Their son said his first words at the age of three, just a few days after starting the drug.
