Following the initial photographs in the first floor drawing room, Mr Zelensky was escorted to the King’s private study, where tea was served during a meeting scheduled for approximately 25 minutes.

His Majesty has consistently demonstrated his support for Ukraine since the Russian invasion, most recently issuing a public message in late January marking the partnership’s first anniversary, in which he praised the “sheer bravery, courage and resilience” of the Ukrainian people.

Mr Zelensky’s trip centres on signing a fresh defence declaration with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, strengthening military cooperation between the two nations.

The agreement aims to combine Ukraine’s technical knowledge with British industrial capabilities to produce drones and other military equipment, while also pursuing closer defence ties with other allied nations.

A key component of the partnership involves establishing an artificial intelligence hub in the Ukrainian capital, with Britain contributing £500,000 towards this “AI centre of excellence”.

According to Downing Street, specialists at the facility will focus on identifying how AI technology can deliver advantages on the battlefield against Russian forces.

The declaration also prioritises collaboration on electronic warfare capabilities alongside drone production and supply.

Additionally, both nations will seek to expand defence industry cooperation with third countries as part of broader efforts to enhance international security amid significant global instability.

Sir Keir emphasised the necessity of coordinated action among allies, stating: “We must work in lockstep with our partners and allies to deliver security at home and abroad, and this new partnership with Ukraine will do just that.”

The Prime Minister highlighted that unmanned aerial vehicles, electronic warfare systems, and swift innovation on the front lines have become essential to both national defence and economic interests, noting that this has been “further magnified by the conflict in the Middle East”.

He added that strengthening defence partnerships would bolster Ukraine’s capacity to resist “Russia’s brutal, ongoing attacks” whilst ensuring Britain and its allies remain equipped to confront emerging threats.

The encounter took place against the backdrop of the 100-year partnership agreement signed by both leaders last year, which established a framework for ongoing solidarity with Ukraine, including financial assistance.
