Elon Musk denies WSJ report he’s cozying up to JD Vance, ditching plans for ‘America Party’

Elon Musk reportedly may not start his proposed America Party after all. While he initially said he planned to launch a third political party, primarily for local and not national elections, The Wall Street Journal reports that he has of late been cozying up to Vice President JD Vance.

In response to posts about the article, Musk responded that “Nothing @WSJ says should ever be thought of as true.” The article from the Journal was titled “Elon Musk Pledged to Start a Political Party. He is Already Pumping the Breaks.”

Vance, who got his start in the tech industry as well, will likely be the GOP frontrunner for the 2028 presidential nomination, when Trump completes his second and final term in office. The Wall Street Journal reports that Musk may instead back Vance financially in that upcoming race.

Musk was a huge supporter of President Donald Trump during the recent election season. Musk and his team were brought in to advise on cuts to government spending across federal agencies through the Department of Government Efficiency. But the two had a bit of a break when Trump backed spending plans in Congress and Musk stated his belief that spending must be cut across the board. Acrimony and accusations followed.

At issue was the Big Beautiful Bill, which had increased funds for border security and other items. Later, a recissions package passed through the Senate to claw back some funding that was approved for this fiscal calendar during the Biden administration.

The two appeared to make amends after this, with Musk continuing to back the GOP and the president and the president continuing to speak highly of Musk. However, Musk pledged to start the America Party anyway. He made the announcement just after Independence Day.

“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it! When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom,” he posted.

Earlier in August, Vance was asked about Musk’s relationship to Trump and the GOP.

“He’s obviously got a complicated relationship right now with the Trump White House, though. My argument to Elon is like, you’re not going to be on the left, right? Even if you wanted to be, and he doesn’t, they’re not going to have your back. That ship has sailed.

“And so I really think it’s a mistake for him to try to break from the President. So my hope is that by the time the midterms, he’s kind of come back in full, but, yeah, I don’t know that he’d take my call right now,” he said.

“I’m sure he would, I kid. I’m sure he would take my call. But obviously, the drama around him, him and the White House over the last couple of months, again, my hope is that just kind of cools down a little bit, because he did help us a lot in the election,” Vance said.

“The President even says, all his frustration, Elon was a very critical part of the team, in the last election. And so my hope is, by the midterms, things are kind of back to normal.”

Musk has not yet posted further about the report, the America Party, or his feelings on Vance. Musk, who is not a natural-born citizen, is not eligible to run for president.
