President Donald Trump has said that he has been able to broker a meeting between the Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Cambodia Prime Minister Hun Manet for a ceasefire after conflict broke out between the countries a few days ago. Trump had demanded that the conflict between Cambodia and Thailand cease and said that the US will not make a trade deal with the countries if they are fighting.
Trump posted to Truth Social, “I just had a very good call with the Prime Minister of Cambodia, and informed him of my discussions with Thailand, and its Acting Prime Minister. Both Parties are looking for an immediate Ceasefire and Peace. They are also looking to get back to the “Trading Table” with the United States, which we think is inappropriate to do until such time as the fighting STOPS. They have agreed to immediately meet and quickly work out a Ceasefire and, ultimately, PEACE! It was an Honor to deal with both Countries. They have a long and storied History and Culture. They will hopefully get along for many years to come. When all is done, and Peace is at hand, I look forward to concluding our Trading Agreements with both!”
This came after Trump’s first post on the subject on Saturday, calling for peace.
“Just spoke to the Prime Minister of Cambodia relative to stopping the War with Thailand. I am calling the Acting Prime Minister of Thailand, right now, to likewise request a Ceasefire, and END to the War, which is currently raging. We happen to be, by coincidence, currently dealing on Trade with both Countries, but do not want to make any Deal, with either Country, if they are fighting — And I have told them so!” Trump said earlier.
“The call with Thailand is being made momentarily. The call with Cambodia has ended, but expect to call back regarding War stoppage and Ceasefire based on what Thailand has to say. I am trying to simplify a complex situation! Many people are being killed in this War, but it very much reminds me of the Conflict between Pakistan and India, which was brought to a successful halt.”
Trump later posted, “I have just spoken to the Acting Prime Minister of Thailand, and it was a very good conversation. Thailand, like Cambodia, wants to have an immediate Ceasefire, and PEACE. I am now going to relay that message back to the Prime Minister of Cambodia. After speaking to both Parties, Ceasefire, Peace, and Prosperity seems to be a natural. We will soon see!”
Tens of thousands of people have fled from their homes as the countries entered a third day of conflict on Saturday, according to the Associated Press. The death count from the conflict so far has reached 32.
Fighting between soldiers broke out along the border the two countries share on July 24 near the Ta Muen Thom temple as there have been escalating tensions over the past few months. The tensions and conflict have broken out over border disputes in the region.
Thailand has closed its border to Cambodia and the Thai Health Ministry has said that 58,000 people fled from their homes in the provinces on the border of the countries. 23,000 on the Cambodia side have fled their homes as well near the border.
Thailand’s Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai on Friday claimed that Cambodia may be guilty of war crimes and that Thailand has exercised the “utmost restraint and patience in the face of provocations and aggression” from Cambodia.
The fighting comes as the Trump administration has been attempting to broker trade deals with the two countries as well as a number of others in the region and elsewhere around the world.
