Mamdani’s socialist pal Omar Fateh runs for Minneapolis mayor
Fateh has previously posted about his “friend” and “fellow [Democratic Socialists of America] (DSA) member,” Zohran Mamdani.
Socialist ally to Zohran Mamdani, Omar Fateh, is now running for Minneapolis mayor. Fateh launched his bid on Sunday in a video announcement.
“My name is Omar Fateh, and I’m running for Minneapolis Mayor because for working people, it’s getting harder to build our lives in this city we love. To make an affordable Minneapolis that works for everyone, we need a Mayor that works as hard as we do. I’m ready to get to work,” Fateh wrote on X alongside a video of him talking about his candidacy for mayor.
Fateh has previously posted about his “friend” and “fellow [Democratic Socialists of America] (DSA) member” Mamdani. In June earlier this year, Fateh posted on X, “Tuesday, June 24 – Delegate Phonebank & Zohran Watch Party My friend and fellow DSA member, Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani is running for Mayor of New York City! Help us reach out to delegates from 6-8 PM and stay to watch Zohran make history in NYC.”
Fateh, who identifies as a “democratic socialist,” according to his government profile, is a state senator in Minnesota representing District 62 in the state. His platform for mayor includes making the city a “safe-haven” for abortion as well as sex change surgeries.
His platform includes a “rent stabilization policy,” which may be another phrase for rent freezes, a policy that Mamdani has proposed in New York. He also wrote on X that he will work to increase the minimum wage to $20 an hour by 2028, similar to Mamdani’s $30 minimum wage policy by 2030 proposal.
Fateh has also proposed that he will “protect” Minneapolis from the Trump White House. “Protecting all of our communities from Donald Trump means not letting MPD interact with ICE, whether it’s for an immigration raid or not. Our residents deserve a mayor who will stand up to Donald Trump and say, ‘no, not in our community,'” Fateh said.
The socialist candidate in Minneapolis also drives home “environmental justice” in his policies, including projects that “prioritize the transition of the City’s vehicle fleet to electric vehicles.”
Fateh has previously spoken at DSA events, encouraging “socialist organizers” in multiple instances.
