Novak Djokovic is through to the second round of Wimbledon. He said afterwards: “It’s great to finish tonight especially before the curfew, I want to thank everyone for staying this late, thank you for the support – it was an amazing atmosphere especially after the roof was closed, it was very loud, hopefully you enjoyed it.

“It’s great to be back inWimbledon and obviously I have to say that first and acknowledge the sacrednessof this court and the tournament has always meant a lot to me and to many otherplayers, it’s a childhood dream so I never take stepping out on this court forgranted.

“I enjoyed myself, obviously abit less in the second set but I went from feelingmy absolute best for a set and a half to my absolute worst for about 45 minutes, whether it was a stomach bug, I don’t know what it is.

“I struggled with that butthe energy came back and I managed to finish thematch on a good note.”

“It’s the drama Mick, I just love it.”

That was definitely a more eventful first-round contest than Novak Djokovic would have liked, but his mid-match struggles contributed to a captivating contest under the Centre Court roof.

Alexandre Muller was not allowed to leave without huge cheers from the appreciative crowd still here and enjoying every moment at home half past 10.

More drama than Novak Djokovic would have liked, with some sort of his medical episode.

A great effort from the Frenchman Alexandre Muller who stole the second set under Djokovic’s nose, but ultimately, the man is back!

Full quotes to come from Novak Djokovic, who says it’s a relief to get his match finished tonight. The 23:00 BST curfew was not too far away.

Djokovic adds that he went from feeling his “absolute best” to his “absolute worst” midway through the match, speculating he may have some sort of stomach bug, but he never considered retiring from the match.

Smiles between the two players at the net at the end of a very watchable first-round contest on Centre Court, before Novak Djokovic takes the acclaim of the crowd.

His hopes of a standalone record 25th Grand Slam title continue.

    Muller 1-6 7-6 (9-7) 2-6 2-6 Djokovic

Novak Djokovic gets it done at the first time of asking and the seven-time Wimbledon champion is through to round two in four sets.

Alexandre Muller winning the second set on a tie-break was definitely not in the script for the Serb, but Djokovic recovered well to book a second-round tie with Great Britain’s Dan Evans on Thursday.

Alexandre Muller may have played his last card here, Novak Djokovic will serve for a place in the second round.

    Muller 1-6 7-6 (9-7) 2-6 2-5 Djokovic*

15-40 on Alexandre Muller’s serve – is this the beginning of the end for the Frenchman’s hopes?

Novak Djokovic only needs one of the two break points as Muller goes wide.

Djokovic will be serving for the match next time around.

A routine hold for Novak Djokovic – he’s just two games away from the second round now.

It’s a funny old game, isn’t it? It was not that long ago that Novak Djokovic appeared extremely vulnerable here.

    Now, the outcome appears inevitable.

Alexandre Muller has given this everything, and ensured this has been the spectacle it has, but Djokovic, the most successful men’s player of all time at Grand Slam tournaments, is unlikely to let him in again now.

That’s not least because of his serving – he’s won 82% of points behind his first serve after more than three hours.

    Muller 1-6 7-6 (9-7) 2-6 2-3 Djokovic*

A reminder that there’s a 23:00 BST curfew in operation at Wimbledon, so the end of this set will almost certainly signal the end of play for today whoever takes it.

If Novak Djokovic wins it, he’ll be through to round two of course.

  13. Muller holdspublished at 22:19 British Summer Time

    Muller 1-6 7-6 (9-7) 2-6 2-3 Djokovic*

A misjudgment from Alexandre Muller, who allows a Novak Djokovic return to hit the ground thinking it’s going out – it drops in. 30-30.

Another great Djokovic return and it’s break point, but Muller saves it with an excellent half-volley at the net. Djokovic might have got to it if he’d have been able to stay upright, but a slight slip at the back of the court ends his chances in that particular point.

So Muller holds and he remains just the one break of serve behind in this set.

Novak Djokovic produces a super drop-volley to win the first point of his service game, but Alexandre Muller comes out swinging from 30-0 down and wins three points in a row to bring up a break point…

Djokovic responds with two aces, but Muller rips a 108mph forehand winner down the line to take us back to deuce.

Ace number 22 of the match then follows for Djokovic, who leads 3-1.

It’s been a battle and you really felt that this could have been one-way traffic if Novak Djokovic had got the second set.

Alexandre Muller deserves a lot of credit the way he was able to fight and resist and get that second set.

Now at two sets to one and with a break in the fourth, it really does look like Djokovic has wrestled control in his favour.

Perhaps now French resistance will be broken, that seems absolutely key, a break in the fourth set and some relief in the Novak Djokovic camp.

I’ve seen Djokovic so many times when there’s big drama and something happens and he just turns it around again and again, it helps that he’s so technically brilliant I suppose.

Novak Djokovic, with his 25th break point of the match, eventually gets the job done in a lengthy Alexandre Muller service game and the Serb has the advantage in set four.

    *Muller 1-6 7-6 (9-7) 2-6 1-1 Djokovic

Fresh from saving those break points, Novak Djokovic gets to 0-40 on the Alexandre Muller serve.

Two of the break points saved – and the third too, when Djokovic goes long with a backhand.

Frustration for the Serb, which he takes out on a backhand which rips down the line to bring up another deuce.

  20. Djokovic saves break points to holdpublished at 21:58 British Summer Time

    *Muller 1-6 7-6 (9-7) 2-6 1-1 Djokovic

Alexandre Muller earns himself a break point but it’s well saved by Novak Djokovic with an ace that clips the outside of the line.

Back comes Muller – he hits the line too and it’s another break point… but then a forehand into the net from the Frenchman. Another chance goes begging.

Another ace wraps up the service game for the seven-time Wimbledon champion.
